Product details

Our store are high quality seeds sourced from all around the world which are hand picked varieties specifically for optimal growing in Asian. Select Seeds are only commercially acceptable (uniform growth, high germination, long life shelf, top rated market varieties) making sure we bring only the best available seeds at an affordable price.

Morphological characteristics
Annual tall herb. Stems erect, 1-3 m tall, stout, white hirsute, unbranched or sometimes branched above. The leaves are alternate, heart-shaped oval or oval, the top is acute or acuminate, there are three-base veins, the margins are coarsely serrated, both sides are short hairy, with long stalks. The inflorescence is very large, about 10-30 cm in diameter, solitary at the end of the stem or branch, often downwardly inclined. Involucral bracts multi-layered, leafy, imbricate arrangement, ovate to ovate-lanceolate, apex caudate acuminate, hirsute or ciliated. The torus is flat or slightly convex, with a semi-membranous plate. The ligulate flowers are numerous, yellow, the tongue spreads, oblong-ovate or oblong, not firm. Tubular flowers very numerous, brown or purple, with lanceolate lobes, fruiting. Achenes obovate or ovate-oblong, slightly flattened, 10-15 mm long, with fine ribs, often white pubescent, with 2 membrane-like caducous pappus at the upper end. The flowering period is July-September, and the fruiting period is August-September.

growing environment
Wild sunflower habitats are mainly grasslands and dry, open areas. They grow along roadsides, fields, desert edges and meadows. It grows best in sunny, humid or disturbed areas. Wild sunflowers tolerate high and low temperatures, but are more resistant to low temperatures, with an optimum temperature range between 21-26°C. Sunflowers have low soil requirements and can grow on all kinds of soils, from fertile soils to dry, barren, and saline-alkali soils. It not only has strong resistance to salt and alkali, but also has salt absorption performance. Can thrive in alkaline soils and is drought resistant.

Cultivation Techniques
1. Site selection: Sunflower roots and stems have well-developed ventilation tissues and are very resistant to waterlogging. Cultivation should choose a land with flat land, medium fertility, convenient irrigation and drainage, and relatively small soil viscosity, and it is not suitable for continuous cropping. The offspring are reproduced by seeds, and peat soil is suitable for sowing. Dressing seeds with new high-fat film before sowing can repel underground pests, isolate virus infection, and improve seed germination rate.

2. Sowing: The sowing time of sunflower is generally March-April, and the optimum temperature for sowing is 18-25°C, and buds usually germinate about 5-7 days after sowing. The basic principle of sowing date selection is to sow seedlings early or late according to the regularity of salinity occurrence, so that seedlings can avoid salinity damage. Sow in spring or summer according to the growth period of the variety.

3. Field inspection: Sunflower is a dicotyledonous crop, and it is more laborious to emerge from the top soil. In addition, soil preparation, poor sowing quality, compaction of the topsoil after sowing, or damage from diseases, insects, rats, birds, etc., can easily lead to lack of seedlings Monopoly. In order to ensure that the whole seedlings are sown, they must be checked field by field and row by row during the emergence period, and the missing seedlings should be replanted in time.

4. Ding seedlings: Sunflower cultivation should be thinned as soon as possible to prevent the seedlings from crowding, which will affect the cultivation of strong seedlings and even the future yield. As for the saline-alkali land and the plots with heavy insect damage, the time of seedling determination can be appropriately delayed. At the same time, sunflower seedlings should be fixed as soon as possible, which is conducive to the cultivation of strong seedlings and the development of flower discs. The seedlings should be fixed when there are 2 pairs of true leaves.

5. Cultivation: sunflowers are generally cultivated 2-3 times for weeding and loosening soil, breaking hardening, retaining water, reducing evaporation, and reducing salinity damage. , the second cultivating was carried out 1 week after the seedlings were fixed, and the third cultivating was completed before the ridge was closed by ditching, cultivating soil and fertilizing.

6. Topdressing: Sunflower prefers fertilizer, and ditching and topdressing are usually carried out during the third cultivating, mainly nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers, 5 kg of diammonium phosphate and 10 kg of urea per mu, and then applied to the soil after mixing evenly. Ditching and cultivating soil can effectively ensure the growth and development of secondary roots, prevent lodging, and reduce basal branches below the cotyledon nodes.

7. Irrigation: Sunflower is a crop that consumes a lot of water. The plant is tall, with many and dense leaves, and the water absorption is 1.74 times that of corn. However, because its growth and development are mostly synchronized with the local rain and heat, the contradiction between water supply and demand is not prominent, and different growth stages are used. Moisture requirements vary widely. The water demand from sowing to budding is not much, the peak water demand is from budding to flowering, and more water is required from flowering to maturity. Sunflowers are irrigated by furrow irrigation. Generally, for varieties with a plant height of 1.5 meters, the first water should be carried out in the bud stage, the second water in the early flowering stage, and the three water in the grain filling stage. For varieties with a plant height of about 2 meters, the first water is carried out 4-5 days before flowering (severe drought, irrigation is advanced), the second water is 6-7 days after the first water, and the third water is in the grain filling period.

8. Temperature: Sunflower is a temperature-loving and cold-resistant crop. It has strong adaptability to temperature, and the seeds have strong low temperature resistance. Seeds with stable local temperature begin to germinate when the temperature is above 2 °C, and can sprout and take root at 4-5 °C. When it reaches 8-10 ℃, it can meet the needs of seed germination and emergence. Sunflower can grow normally during the entire growth process as long as the temperature is not lower than 10°C.

9. Light: Sunflower is a short-day crop, and its young leaves, leaves and discs have strong phototropism. Adequate sunshine. The seedlings grow robustly, and in the mid-growth stage, it can promote vigorous stem and leaf growth, normal flowering and pollination, and improve the seed setting rate; in the later stage of growth, the grains can be full and full. In production, due to climatic factors, the light intensity is affected, resulting in poor flowering and pollination, and the rate of empty seedlings increases.
