Growth habit1. Temperature: Winter melon is warm and heat-resistant. The optimum temperature for growth and development is 25-30℃, the optimum temperature for seed germination is 28-30℃, and the minimum temperature for root growth is 12-16℃, which are higher than other melons and vegetables. The suitable temperature for pollination and fruit setting is about 25℃, and the temperature below 20℃ is not conducive to fruit development.
2. Sunlight: Winter melon is a short-day crop. Short-day and low temperature are beneficial to the differentiation of flower buds. However, long-day and sufficient light are required during the entire growth period. In the fruiting period, if it encounters long-term rainy and low temperature, flowering, melting and rotten melons will occur.
3. Moisture: Winter melon has a large leaf area, strong transpiration, and requires more water. However, if the air humidity is too large or too small, it is not conducive to pollination, fruit setting and fruit development.
4. Nutrition: The growth period of wax gourd is long. The vegetative growth of the plant and the growth and development of the fruit require sufficient soil nutrients, and more fertilizers must be applied. Nitrogen fertilizer is the main fertilization, and phosphorus and potassium fertilizers are appropriately combined to enhance plant resistance to stress and increase the production of single fruit seeds.
5. Soil: Winter melon is not strict with soil requirements, sandy loam or dry loam can be cultivated, but continuous cropping should be avoided.
Reproduction methodTimely sowing: The sowing period for spring planting is from December to March of the following year, and the sowing period for autumn planting is from June to July. Spring planting is better with seedling transplantation, which is good for cold prevention; for autumn planting, bud sowing is better, seedling transplantation requires soaking and accelerating germination. Seedlings are grown in a nutrient bowl. Then it can be broadcasted to the field on demand, usually with a seed rate of 750-1500kg/hm2.
Sowing and raising seedlings: The nutrient soil required for nutrient bowl seedling growth should be prepared in advance, and it can be mixed with roasted and sieved fertile garden soil or fire mortar, decomposed pig, cow dung, and chaff ash. The volume ratio of the three is about 6:2:2, and a small amount of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium compound fertilizer can be added. The addition amount is generally controlled at 0.2%-0.3%, and it is required to be finely mixed. After sowing to the emergence of seedlings, you should pay attention to watering, but do not have too much water to prevent rotten roots from retting, just keep the soil moist.
